The Transfusion Medicine Handbook is designed to assist hospital staff and other health professionals in modern Transfusion Medicine Practice.

8. Clinical Alternatives and Applications

Overview

There are no effective alternatives to red cells, platelets, white cells, haemopoietic progenitor cells, plasma and most fractionated products.

This section, is mainly about minimising exposure to allogeneic blood components. Practices like pre-deposit autologous donation, acute normovolaemic haemodilution (ANH) and perioperative salvage are all essentially modifications of routine blood transfusion practice. However, the circumstances where these procedures are indicated or applicable are limited.
