National Blood Donor Week is coming
Join us this National Blood Donor Week (June 12-18) in celebrating and recognising YOU – our valued donors – who roll up your sleeves whenever you can to ensure we have a constant supply of blood and blood products.
Did you know less than four percent of the eligible population in New Zealand currently donates?
And over the coming 12 months, we will need more than 40,000 new donors to join the registry to keep pace with growing demand.
Please join us by getting involved and encouraging new donors to join our whānau of lifesavers.
It’s all in the numbers
- There are more than 115,000 blood, plasma and platelet donors in New Zealand: Blood donors – 92,043; plasma donors - 25,464; and platelet donors - 443.
- The demand for blood and plasma is rising, which is why we need over 5000 donations each week.
Your donations help 30,000 patients every year. - Right now, the need for plasma is growing by 10 percent every year. That’s because there are people who rely on treatments which are made from donated plasma.
- But we still need the red stuff too, especially A and O blood groups because over 80 percent of New Zealanders has those blood types.
- It’s amazing to think just one blood donation can save up to three lives. And a plasma donation can be made into 11 different lifesaving products.
