Amazing Story
Steph's 100th!
Huge congratulations from New Zealand Blood Service to Steph, who has just made her 100th blood donation! As a committed donor, she is pleased to find out that she might be able to donate her old hip bones soon too, as she is awaiting hip replacement surgery.
Over to Steph:
"I started donating blood back when I turned 18. My mother was a blood donor and it just seemed the right thing to do. I don't know anyone personally that has needed blood or the plasma we donate, but the way I see it, it is only a small amount of time out of your day to help those in need.
On my very first donation I didn't listen to the nurses who said "Sit down and have a drink before you leave." I carried on, and on the way back to work I stopped at a chip shop where I promptly passed out. I always stopped for the drink and bikkies after that!
As my children got older I encouraged them to start donating too. As soon as they turned 16 they signed up. My son was very keen on finding out his blood type (AB+) and has carried on since then. Today he made his 23rd donation as I did my 100th.
To celebrate my 100th donation we took the nurses a few home made chocs and fudges; they are always so nice and work so hard to look after the donors."
