Foreword

This Handbook is designed to assist hospital staff and other health professionals in modern transfusion medicine practice, particularly those who are prescribing and administering blood components and fractionated products. In addition to information about the medicines and services made available by NZBS, it provides a framework for the clinical indications for the use of, the procedures for administration and the management of adverse reactions to blood components and fractionated products in patients.

Some aspects of these guidelines are covered in more detail in the NZBS Clinical Compendium, Medsafe medicine data sheets, monographs, hospital clinical policies and other departmental manuals. Additional clinical information for healthcare professionals and patients is also available on the NZBS website (www.nzblood.co.nz). If information in these should not accord with the principles outlined in this document, the differences should be referred in writing to New Zealand Blood Service, attention Editor Transfusion Medicine Handbook:
